Are Your Assignments Fair?

November 6, 2009

Managers and their subordinates have a relationship that is sometimes militaristic, sometimes paternal, sometimes collaborative, sometimes a combination of these, but always there’s the inherent parent-child premise as an underlying theme.  Although as you might guess by now, I prefer a more collaborative relationship, I’m perfectly capable of employing any of the other methods as needs and company objectives dictate.  Accomplishing departmental and company objectives should always be the ultimate motivator and goal.

Whatever seems to work best for you and your team, your approach to task and project assignment should not be based on any personal agenda you may have.  Your team members will certainly be perceptive enough to see one if it exists.  Your assignments should be based on experience, ability, and fairness.  Your team will notice if the same person keeps getting the better or more challenging assignments, and they’ll also notice if the same person keeps getting the unpleasant, menial, or routine assignments.  If either of these is happening within your group,  you should ask yourself: why? There may be a perfectly good explanation, but check it out first. Play devil’s advocate with yourself occasionally to make sure.

Opportunities for growth and experience are the building blocks for your team members’ current and future success.  Help them on their way up, because you may meet them someday on your way down.  Besides, it is the right thing to do.
